scrub me® takes on toner.

To tone or not to tone?  That is the question!  scrub me® has found that many skin care users aren't exactly sure of what a toner is, its purpose, or how to fit it into their daily regime.  We can assure you, you are definitely missing out if you are not toning your skin on a daily basis.  Our founder (a seasoned esthetician) knows the benefits of a great toner and uses the toning bar on a daily basis.

scrub me secret: make sure to use your toner and other skin care products twice daily, on a daily basis.  skin needs time to absorb and adapt to toners, serums and moisturizers.  since the skin has many layers and is constantly making new cells it takes a few weeks for us to start noticing changes and improvements from our products.

We wanted to shed some light on what a toning product is and why it is important to implement into your daily routine.

What is a toner?

Tea tree oil is an excellent antiseptic. This makes it a great ingredient in toners for oily or acneic skin.

A toner is a product that helps to balance and refresh skin, promoting better absorption of other skin care products.  There are different toners created for different skin types.  Astringent based toners are typically used for oily or acneic skin types because they remove excess oils from the skin's surface.  Ingredients like witch hazel, salicylic acid, and tea tree essential oil are common ingredients in astringent toners.

scrub me secret: toners for oily skin are also used in the treatment room by estheticians and dermatologists to prep the skin before various services.  before microdermabrasion, peels, and other exfoliating treatments, toning helps for the procedures to have a better effect.

Other toners are water, glycerin, or oil based.  These products are also referred to as "skin refreshers".  These toners are best for dry, dehydrated, and mature skin types.  Some products will contain a blend of ingredients from both categories, these are great for combination skin types or skin that is perfectly balanced.  Toners come in many shapes and sizes.  The most common form is a liquid in a spray bottle that you spritz directly onto skin.  Others are thicker substances that are meant to be applied to skin with a cotton pad.  Some are made in a solid form that you use in conjunction with water before applying to skin, like our toning bar!

When should I use a toner?

A toner should be used after cleansing, before applying serums and moisturizers.  Using a toner before your treatment products help them to absorb fully into the skin.

Our restoring bar is meant for cleansing face and body. This bar will leave skin balanced after cleansing, unlike other bar soaps on the market.

Ideally you are using a cleanser that keeps your skin's pH balanced.  If not, toners will help to neutralize skin after cleansing.  Many cleansers have a pH that is much too high and will leave skin dry or sensitive.  Try cleansing with a scrub me® face/body bar.

Toners can also be used at various times throughout the day to refresh dry or tight skin and balance oils in acneic skin.  Skin refreshers and toners for combination or dry skin are safe to use as many times as you want throughout the day.  Heavy astringent toners are best to use only twice daily as to avoid irritation.  We love throwing a toner in our gym bag, it's great to refresh and reset skin after a yoga session.

Why are toners important?

Like we said, toners are able to help our skin function properly and our other products absorb fully.  How are they able to do this?  Since astringent based toners help clear and balance excess oils on the skin's surface, any serum or moisturizer applied after can fully penetrate into the skin.  Oils on the surface can clog pores and create a small barrier between the epidermis and your product.

scrub me secret: If you have an oily or acneic skin type you might be focusing mainly on cleansing skin and removing oils from the surface.  with this skin type you also need to use the appropriate moisturizer (lightweight or oil free). if oily/acneic skin is stripped of oils and nutrients it can in turn create excess oils that we do not want.

Toners for dry and mature skin types nourish skin that lacks oils and nutrients.  Giving your skin this light burst of nourishment helps to keep the barrier healthy.  When the skin's barrier is healthy all of your products will function how they are supposed to.  When the skin is unbalanced and vulnerable some serums and moisturizers can cause irritation.  If your skin starts to feel dry or tight throughout the day, a toner or skin refresher can be applied to nourish it.

scrub me®'s version of a toner is one that is great for all skin types!  Our toner comes in a bar form and is also a cleanser.  This way you will get all the great benefits of a toner while you wash.  Lime essential oil acts as a light astringent, helping to balance oils.  Cucumber extract is amazing for firming and refreshing skin, giving it the nourishment it needs.  It's awesome to be able to have a cleanser that covers the toning step also.  This means you just have to treat and moisturize and go!

We love the feeling of spritzing a refreshing toner onto our skin in the middle of the afternoon. The best part? We don't have to touch our face, so it wont ruin our tinted moisturizer.

scrub me secret: even though our toner comes in a bar form we occasionally enjoy a toner you can spritz onto skin.  these types of toner are an awesome way to refresh your makeup or tinted moisturizer.  we like these because you can use them without having to physically touch your face.  you might be seeing one in our store soon!
