How To Get Rid of My Double Chin?
“How do I get rid of my double chin?” and “What can I do about my double chin?” are questions I receive often as an esthetician.
What is a double chin? It’s a pocket of what looks like excess fat and skin right underneath your chin and mandible. This makes your face look less defined and is often associated with aging skin or gaining weight. But often that isn’t all fat under there, it’s fluid retention that is actually easier to get rid of vs. fat.
Why do I have a double chin?
Lifestyle habits that can lead to a “double chin” or excess fluid in the face:
A diet that contains high amounts of sodium, fried foods, and a lack of colorful vegetables, fruits, and berries.
Drinking alcohol often or in high quantities.
A lack of movement. (walking, swimming, yoga, weight lifting, etc) This can lead to stagnant lymphatic fluid in your body.
Poor sleep. This also leads to inflammation and stagnant lymph fluid.
scrub me secret: I believe you see the best results for reducing your double chin or heaviness in the jaw when you assess and adjust certain lifestyle things such as sleep and diet and explore skincare treatment options.
Other reasons you have a double chin or “turkey neck”:
Genetics
Large weight gain (or a lot of weight loss could cause “turkey neck”)
Poor posture
Loss of elasticity in the skin
scrub me secret: turkey neck is a term used to describe loose skin that hangs directly under the chin. The most common causes of this are aging and genetics.
Non Surgical Double Chin Removal
Gua sha or other lifting facial massage (start with my gua sha for beginners video tutorial and go from there!)
Using a microcurrent device like a NuFace or Foreo to firm and lift sagging skin.
Small lifestyle changes like drinking less alcohol, drinking more water, ingesting less sodium, getting a little more sleep/more restful sleep, and getting more movement.
Cosmetic Double Chin Removal
More invasive treatments that treat stubborn fat are liposuction, air sculpt, or submental fat injections
Always consult a specialist or doctor before making any decisions about these treatments. I would suggest getting a couple of different opinions from professionals.
